About me.

I was that funny kid in school who actually enjoyed writing assignments — the quiet one with a big imagination and a need to express himself. At the time, I never would have guessed this desire would evolve into a career that I love.

My Story

Though I’ve lived in Oregon for 20 years, I remain an Iowa boy at heart. I was born and raised in a small town surrounded by corn fields, and it’s there that I learned the value of hard work and clear communication.

After earning my communications degree, I cut my teeth as a journalist — first as a sports writer, then covering news and features while managing a small newsroom. It wasn’t an easy living, but I enjoyed the chaos of chasing leads, meeting deadlines, and learning how to tell stories that mattered. Though newspapers currently struggle, I wouldn’t change this experience for anything.

Eventually, I shifted into marketing and media relations, bringing those same storytelling skills to a new arena. That move eventually led me into the healthcare world, where I developed extensive experience crafting content and campaigns, particularly in the field of physical therapy.

Today, I write for a number of clients within a variety of industries:

  • Healthcare: Private practice physical therapists, dental clinics, dermatology, and general health and wellness organizations

  • Nonprofit: Fundraising events, community networking, healthcare, basic needs charities, etc.

  • Technology: Software as a service (SaaS) companies, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, etc.

  • Financial: Financial advisors, mortgage lenders, and money transfer organizations.

  • Sports and Lifestyle: For newspapers, magazines, blogs, and other online publications.

  • Marketing and PR, such as content to promote best marketing practices

No matter the field, my focus is the same: understand the audience, define the goals, and create work that informs, engages, and inspires action.

At the same time, I enjoy having built a career and a life in one of the most beautiful corners of the country — all while continuing to write, strategize, and create work that connects with real people. It’s a place and a pace that fuel both my creativity and my commitment to helping clients tell their stories well.

Frequenty Asked Questions

  • When reaching out to potential employers, I used to proudly say that I boasted a “blue-collar work ethic,” a phrase that originated from my time working as a journalist in the Midwest. Back then, it meant I wasn’t afraid of deadlines, long hours, or rolling up my sleeves to get the story right.

That mindset has never left me.

Today, it shows up in the way I approach writing and strategy — digging deep into the subject matter, understanding the audience, and delivering work that’s not just done, but done well. Whether it’s crafting a blog post, shaping a brand’s voice, or building a full content plan, I bring the same grit, curiosity, and commitment to results that I did chasing leads in a newsroom.

Yet, while I still carry that same tenacity, I’ve learned that the greatest impact is often achieved by pairing hard work with a calm, deliberate approach. Taking the time to understand audiences, clarify goals, refine intentions, and shape calls to action has only strengthened my work.

It’s the balance of persistence and precision that ensures every piece I create not only gets done, but it gets results.

  • “Content” is such a boring word. It’s inanimate. It does nothing to capture how a well-crafted mix of words and images can attract, motivate, engage, build credibility, create connections, and move someone to take action.

That’s why I view myself as more than just a writer or “content creator.” To excel at my job requires me to be a strategist who considers a wide range of factors (i.e., timing, goals, audiences, and context) to ensure every piece I create has a clear purpose.

My job isn’t about filling empty, quiet space with “content.” It’s about using words and ideas to make an impact and to show measurable results.

  • I’m inspired not just by a job well done (though it helps to be proud of your work). I get pumped seeing my work contribute to the success of a larger marketing effort or campaign. As I said previously, I don’t like just filling space or checking boxes. I’m mission-oriented, and I want to see my efforts contribute to your overall growth and success.

In addition, I’m a dedicated reader and learner. I’m always in the middle of a good book (I love both fiction and nonfiction), and I’m an avid consumer of good journalism. Few things can draw me in better than a well-written long-form news or feature story that shines a new light on something unexpected.

  • I’m sometimes confused with another Ben Montgomery who happens to also be a writer, but who’s also achieved way more as an investigative reporter than I have as a so-called “content marketer.” While I’d love say I’ve been a Pulitzer Prize finalist, that’s the other guy.
